An April TAG event at Bear Creek
« Thread started on: Jan 10th, 2007, 8:34pm » |
|
In May of 2004, a geocaching event was held at the Bear Creek Educational Forest. About 50 folks attended and from that gathering TAG was launched. As a salute to the event, those attending contributed to a night cache placed in the nearby Lines Tract which we named "Lion's Track". We have secured permission to have another day long event on Saturday, April 21 and they have agreed to let us place up to four temporary caches for teaching purposes.
The cache page is done and will be activated on or about the 21st of this month on geocaching.com.
Please post if you're interested in placing one of the caches or presenting.
Both MC and I really want this to be a TAG sponsored and supported event. It's an opportunity to share our knowledge and experiences with newbies and established geocachers alike while caching in a little known educational/recreational area.
Anybody interested?

Well... ...Bear Creek is, in my opinion, THE example that all wilderness areas and supporting facilities should aspire to. It is that phenomenal! If you haven't been there... ...go! And the caches there are nice too!
While I would LOVE to see an event there in their lovely facilities, I would ask (make that BEG) for another weekend (date).
Sunday, April 22, 2007 is Earth Day. I can almost personally assure you that there will be at least one big Cache In Trash Out (CITO) event in this area. I would say do a CITO at Bear Creek, but that's one place that does NOT need any CITO. They keep the place immaculate!
I know that a good number of people would welcome two events in one weekend, but there are probably just as many that would have to choose one or the other.
That's my take, for what it's worth. I hope you move the date. If not, we'll still try our best to attend.

I'll check on the weekends before and after to see if the park is available although I understand the Earth Day CITO worldwide event is the weekend before on the 14th. http://www.cacheintrashout.org/
You're right about Bear Creek not needing a CITO event. It's has to be the NICEST park around and the handicap accessable trail just adds "icing" on a well planned and executed "cake".
Keep watching the forums for more information.
Anybody else have suggestions about dates?

Correct, you are! Let me check with FGA tonight. I'll bet that they'll be doing the local CITO's to coincide with the BIG day.
With that being the case, the weekend you originally mentioned would be fine. So, disregard!
Thanks!

Please post if you are interested in helping set up this event, demonstrating a geoskill, placing a day cache, donating food and/or cooking it or anything you can think of that will make the event run smoothly and be fun and educational.

I've posted this to the front page. Since this will be a TAG event, we should probably have an election to create a larger board.

K - I don't know all the topics that will be discussed at the Bear Creek event but I would like to see a class on some of the benefits that are offered premimum members at gc.com. I just found out about several different ones that I didn't know about (& I have to admit I can't figure out now that I know about them). This may already be planned. Also, we have a friend that is a professor of environmental history at FSU. We have invited him to join us at Bear Creek and I know he has it on his calendar. I would like to offer his services for a talk on the environment. Let me know if you're interested so I can let him know that I volunteered him. And as I told you before I can help with anything you need. Did you find out if they have the internet? I can checkout a laptop & maybe even a projector from work. Daughter Amy is a cook. She can help with food.

Current features for Premium Members
Pocket Query Generator
The Pocket Query Generator allows you to create custom geocache queries and have them emailed to you on a daily or weekly basis. You can also run these queries on the "seek a cache" page as a customized search query. Check the supported software applications page for updates on existing and new software that can take advantage of Pocket Queries.
Geocaching Maps
When logged in you can pan, zoom and identify caches from any point on the planet. It's an easy way to visualize all the local caches and quickly pinpoint the area of interest. Geocaches you have found are listed with checkboxes, and caches will have a travel bug icon if one has been placed in the cache.
Download individual listings to GPX
You have the ability to click on a link to download a cache page directly to GPX format. GPX files contain all the information on the cache page which can be read by applications that support this file format.
Unlimited Watch Lists
You can add as many geocaches and Travel Bugs to your watch list. When a travel bug or geocache is logged you will receive an email with a copy of the log.
Bookmark Lists and Ignore Feature
You can create multiple bookmark lists, like "My favorite caches" or "Caches I want to find," that can be shared with others or kept private for your own use. You are also able to generate and add listings to a personal ignore list, for those caches you never plan to find but show up in your search results.
Instant Log Notification Feature
You can subscribe to a location and whenever certain logs are entered by geocachers in that area, you receive an email. The new "publish" log type will allow you to be the first one in your area to get notified of a new listing. As the new feature is improved, other log types like found notes will be added.
Subscriber-Only Caches
Some caches are only available to premium members. This has been a request of many geocachers who want to put more energy into designing a cache for dedicated geocachers. As the cache owner, you can make any of your caches "subscriber only," so folks will need a subscription to seek it out. (Note: member only caches may not be any better than public geocaches. Each cache is managed by their cache owner.)
Change your forum title
If you're a more active user in the forums, you can change your forum title from the generic "Geocacher" to something else.
You are the *first* to see new features
Occasionally new features will become available before the general public can see them. Be the first to play with new gaming concepts before everyone else.
Caches along a route
After uploading a route to Geocaching.com you can get a Pocket Query of caches along that route! It's one of the latest features available to Premium members.
Have an idea?
If you have ideas for new features for Premium Members, post a note in the Geocaching.com Web discussion forums (you'll need to be logged in to view).

Ron since you are the official representative, I think you should present about the advantages of premium membership.
SandiB, your environmental friend sounds like someone to do an overview about how best to be friends of the environment and not polluters. Please ask if he can come.
I'd still love to have someone come and explain orienteering since it goes over my head. It might also be good to have a companion session about reading topo maps.
GeoBain has offered to help with explaining GSAK (he's tried to explain to me, but . . . ) It's ME not you Richard, promise!!!
The forester, Karen, at Bear Creek can probably give a safety talk about prevention of accidents and first aid.
Anything else?

I would LOVE to hear something on Topo maps, like how to use them and where to get them! I have no clue where to get them.
I like the idea of first aid too! I always carry my first aid kit w/me! We have an array of first aid books at home, every now and then I look through them. In a pinch I could doctor someone up!
Just wondering, may be a bit wild for TLH area, but a survival course? Gets quite important in the rocky, pitfall, freezing areas!

One recommendation that I can give you based on my limited Geocaching event attendance is that less is more.
GeoSpirit 2006: We had a talk from someone from the Suwannee River Water Management District and some door prizes were awarded. Other than that, everything happened informally. That event was fun and we've made a lot of friends from there!
Geocaching 1101: GeoBain and friends put together a very informative presentation on, if I remember correctly, pocket queries and caches along a route. Some Chex Mix and Sodas made for a nice snack. There were permanent and temporary caches available for everyone to hunt. Another success.
What-A-Meet!: Nothing really formal planned, but 50+ people grabbed a bit to eat, moved on to Lake Ella, and proceeded to socialize for hours! Another success.
Miller Landing CITO: After about an hour and a half of cleanup, we went after the Action Jackson cache that was about a 1.2 mile walk, one-way. I have to say that doing that cache as a group of about 15 was one of the more enjoyable things I've done caching. The camaraderie was wonderful. There was lots of talking and laughing!
If it were my event, I'd have the food as a potluck, have GeoBain do his demonstration of pocket queries and caches along a route, and then have the park personnel give us a little information about the park itself. Along with some time for socializing, that's probably a 2 - 3 hour event.
At the event end time, have a group hike to collect smileys on the two caches that are currently there. There's always the short, but VERY cool talking educational forest trail for those that might already have those finds or that aren't interested.
The trails at Bear Creek enroute to Boo Boo's Toy Box are stunning. As if the event wouldn't be enough, the walk to Boo Boo's would be the cherry on top!
I guess what I'm trying to say is that I'm quickly learning that with the Geocaching crowd, you really don't have to do too much to keep them entertained!
Hope this helps provide some food for thought!

The Bear Creek event aka: North Central Florida Geocaching Event is only 6 weeks away. I know it will be a topic of discussion on the 31st but I encourage anyone thinking about attending to log onto the cache page and post a note. That way we can keep track of the numbers and plan accordingly. Click the link to go to the cache page. http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?guid=a339c2b9-a586-44b0-a36f-d0ed0a49bf25
There is a primative camping area at the park for group camping. If there's enough interest, I'll check with the ranger about reserving it. I don't think it's expensive but it is a hike to get there.
I'm still in need of volunteers to place temporary caches for teaching purposes for the day. I've got a question in to GC to determine if we can get cache credit but haven't heard back yet. Ron, perhaps you can check on it for us. I know the tract is saturated and no more permanent caches can be set out.
A variety of cache types would be a great way to introduce inovative styles.
We are looking forward to a great time of caching, sharing and eating.
