Fall Event for TAG
« Thread started on: Jun 19th, 2005, 12:03am » |

MC and I have been giving consideration to a fall event for members of TAG and others who either cache in our area or who are interested in learning more about it. Bear Creek Educational Forest in Gadsden County where we had the May 2004 event has built a large classroom and still has the pavilion. I'm not sure of the cost but will be willing to check. River Bluff Landing on the Leon side of Lake Talquin off of 20 could also be a great site.
My thinking is a meet, eat and greet with some caching and exchanging of ideas. Not quite as "formal" as the Bear Creek event but with more local caching, perhaps some team caching and even a night cache since the weather will be cooler.
I need to hear from the rest of you, members or not, to know if we should pursue a fall event. I'm thinking a Saturday event (not on an FSU game day) but a free weekend so all who want to attend, can.
Let me know if you have any ideas of other meeting places that are more central with plenty of space for placing temporary caches and even some permanent ones.
After attending GWIII, I realize we need to have our enthusiasm buttons polished and pushed.
Everyone in favor of being polished and pushed, vote aye!
Still caching even in this heat . . . MasterCacheR & K

Aye,
A fall event sounds good to me. When do the temperatures start to break? September?
Either of those 2 locations would be good but I prefer the River Bluff site. I also think Eleanor K Phipps Park out on Meridian in north TLH would be a good location since it has plenty of space and several caches already.
I think a short (starting a 2-3 hours before dark) informal hot dog cookout with some temporary caches placed for the day would be nice and not too intimidating for any of us. I would be willing to supply hot dogs and buns if this is a go. It's not yard bird but hot dogs are quick, cheap and easy and seem to be popular.
Just my thoughts, Flips

I like the way you think Daniel! If you're familiar with the park in NE Tally, why don't you see what dates they have available. I'm sure we can use the $ left from meetings/pizza/dues to pay for hot dogs, buns, etc.
I think a few new caches for the day and the existing ones are a great idea and keeping it late in the day and not such an involved event is good too.
Do you think we should "put the word out" via the media?
What about the rest of you, Sorcia, Goldkey, Floridan come on guys - speak up!

I have been trying to get a hold of someone from Phipps Park using my googled contact info: Tallahassee City of: Phipps Park (850) 891-3975 4000 N Meridian Rd Tallahassee, FL 32312
I have not had any luck and no returns on my calls to find out if they have a spot for us to reserve in September. I will keep trying the phone route.
Daniel
I just found their e-mail contact site on the talgov.com page and sent them an email. Hopefully I will know our options soon.
I also found this request form. If I dont hear back from them via the email route, should we fill it out? It is not a reservation just a request for for a park permit.

I got an email reply back from the parks department. They said to fill out the form and send it back to them.
I will fill it out and email it it to interested parties here and make sure it says what we want before I submit it to the parks dept. Sound good?

Kay,
I have filled out the form but have a few questions before I submit it. I have been trying to send you a copy via email but have been unsuccessful. Can you shoot me an email via my earthlink account?
Thanks, Daniel

Chris and Kay,
I have an OK from the parks department to reserve a pavilion. Please check your email or write me @ d_a n_s s_p e_n c_er@earthlink.net. (Note-You will have to remove spaces/underscores to use that address.)
I am trying to get time of day to hold the event so we can get the final reservations in and get it listed on GC.com.

Thanks Chris for including notice of this fall event on the home page. For those who plan to attend, please note it on the Cache page at Geocaching.com and consider bringing something sweet or tea/softdrinks to share. Everything else will be provided. If anyone has any ideas for the event, post it here. That's what the forum is for.

Flipsican,
Do newbies actually attend TAG events or will I feel out of place?
I have three dogs and they love scratches just above their tail, do you?

Lolo Byrd,
Yes, Newbies do attend cache events. This would be a good way to find your first cache and meet a few other cachers
BTW Flips is loves to be scratched and is small enough that you can get large areas of his body at all the same time. Just don't stop scratching unless you want him to nudge your hand until you start again.

Count me in, sounds fun! Haven't been to a cache event down in Florida yet... it should be good to meet some fellow cachers. Can't wait!

Be sure to check the new caches being listed around town before you attend. They will go active on the day before the event.
